Memo and Destination Tag: Why Crypto Deposits Go Missing (and How to Fix It)

Updated 2026-10-27 · by BoosterHand Editorial

Some coins don’t give every user their own address. Instead, the casino or exchange uses one shared address for everyone and tells deposits apart by an extra number or text: the memo, tag or comment. Forget it, and your coins arrive at the right address but nobody knows they are yours.

Which coins use a memo or tag

Coin / networkName of the fieldTypical format
XRP (Ripple)Destination tagNumber, e.g. 104738291
Stellar (XLM)MemoText or number
TON (Toncoin, USDT on TON)Memo / commentText or number
EOSMemoText
Cosmos (ATOM) and similar chainsMemoText or number
Hedera (HBAR), Algorand (ALGO)*Memo / noteText or number

*Depends on the platform. The rule is simple: if the deposit page shows a memo or tag, it is mandatory. Bitcoin, Ethereum/ERC-20, Tron/TRC-20, Solana and Litecoin normally use unique addresses and need no memo.

How to send a deposit correctly

  1. On the casino’s deposit page, select the coin and the network.
  2. Copy both the address and the memo/tag. Many casinos show them as two separate fields with two copy buttons.
  3. In your wallet or exchange, paste the address into “address” and the memo into “memo”, “tag”, “MEMO/Tag” or “comment”.
  4. For a first deposit, send a small test amount and wait until it is credited.
  5. Keep the transaction ID until the deposit appears in your balance.

Never put the memo inside the address field, and never reuse an old memo — some casinos generate a new one per deposit.

Withdrawals: the reverse risk

When you withdraw XRP, XLM or TON to an exchange, the exchange’s deposit page also shows a memo or tag. If the casino’s withdrawal form has a “tag” or “memo” field, fill it in with the exchange’s value. If it has no such field, do not withdraw that coin to an exchange — use a personal wallet with its own address, or choose another coin.

I forgot the memo — what now?

The coins are usually not lost, but recovery depends on the receiving platform’s support team.

  1. Collect evidence: transaction ID, amount, time, sending address, receiving address, and a screenshot of the deposit page.
  2. Contact support of the platform that received the coins (the casino for a deposit, the exchange for a withdrawal). Use words like “deposit without memo / missing destination tag”.
  3. Expect a manual process. Some platforms credit you within days; others charge a recovery fee or require ID verification first.
  4. Do not send more coins to “test” — it only creates a second case.

If the platform refuses or stops responding, escalate through the casino’s licence complaint route — see how licences work.

Key takeaways

  • A memo or tag identifies you at a shared address — if it is shown, it is required.
  • Copy address and memo separately, and test with a small amount first.
  • When withdrawing to an exchange, use the exchange’s memo, or choose a coin without one.
  • A forgotten memo is usually recoverable through support — keep the TXID.
