How the Mines math works

A 5×5 board has 25 tiles. With m mines, your first click is safe with probability (25 − m) / 25. After a safe click there is one safe tile fewer, so the second click is safe with (24 − m) / 24, and so on. Multiply them and you get the chance to survive k clicks: C(25 − m, k) / C(25, k).

The fair multiplier is the inverse of that chance. The game pays a little less: RTP ÷ chance. That gap is the house edge, and it is the same whatever you choose. We tested this on 1,000,000 simulated rounds per strategy in BoosterHand Lab, and every strategy ended near −1% of the money wagered.

FAQ

What are the odds of surviving a click in Mines?

On a 5×5 board with m mines, the first click is safe with probability (25 − m) / 25. Every safe click removes a safe tile, so the chance of surviving k clicks in a row is C(25 − m, k) / C(25, k). With 3 mines the first click is 88% safe, but 10 clicks in a row survive only 19.8% of the time.

How is the Mines multiplier calculated?

A fair multiplier is 1 divided by the chance of surviving all your clicks. The game then keeps its house edge: with a 99% RTP the payout is 0.99 ÷ chance. Example: 3 mines and 5 clicks survive 49.6% of the time, so the payout is about 2.00x.

Is there a Mines strategy that beats the house?

No. Every number of mines and every number of clicks has the same expected return, the game's RTP. In our 1,000,000-round simulation every strategy ended close to −1% of the money wagered. Corners, patterns and "hot tiles" do not change the odds, because each board is random.

Which Mines setting is safest?

Fewer mines and fewer clicks win more often but pay less, so losses come slowly. More mines or more clicks win rarely but pay more, so results swing harder. The average cost per $1 bet is the same.
