How the Plinko math works
At every peg the ball goes left or right with a 50/50 chance. After n rows it lands in one of n + 1 slots. The number of paths to slot k is C(n, k), so its chance is C(n, k) / 2^n — a binomial distribution, the same bell curve as a Galton board. The edge slots have exactly one path each, which is why they are so rare.
The RTP of a payout table is the sum of multiplier × chance over all slots. Risk levels usually share the same RTP: high risk just takes money from the middle slots and puts it on the edges. See what that does to 10,000 players in our Plinko simulation.
FAQ
What are the odds of hitting the edge in Plinko?
On a board with n rows where every bounce is 50/50, each edge slot is 1 in 2^n. With 16 rows that is 1 in 65,536 per edge, or 1 in 32,768 for either edge. With 8 rows it is 1 in 256 per edge.
How do I calculate the RTP of a Plinko payout table?
Multiply each slot's multiplier by its probability and add them up. The probability of slot k on an n-row board is C(n, k) / 2^n. Enter the multipliers from the game's info screen into the calculator to see the exact RTP.
Is high risk Plinko better than low risk?
Not on average: a game's risk levels usually share the same RTP. High risk moves the money to the rare edge slots and pays less in the middle, so results swing much more. In our 1,000,000-ball simulation the median high-risk player lost almost 5 times more than the median low-risk player over 1,000 balls.
Can a Plinko strategy beat the house?
No. Each ball is independent and the edge is built into the payout table. Changing rows, risk level or bet size changes the swings, not the expected loss per dollar.
